WHAT IS A COMPLETE SQUEEGEE?

A Complete Squeegee is the sum of three parts: a squeegee handle, a compatible channel, and a blade of squeegee rubber.

There are a multitude of options available from top brands such as Unger, Ettore, Moerman, Pulex, Sorbo and more. Complete squeegees can be used by hand or on a pole and are available in a variety of sizes typically starting at 6 inches all the way up to 36 inches for larger panes of glass.

Whatever brand you choose, professional window squeegees often feature a lightweight, ergonomic design that is easy on the wrist and suitable for residential, storefronts and more. Professionals tend to carry different sizes of squeegees in their arsenal that make easy work on different types of windows.

When you purchase a complete squeegee from WCR the handle and channel will obviously be compatible and ready to use but many handles and channels are also interchangeable. The Ultimate Squeegee Combo is a popular example which features an Ettore Master Brass Channel and Moerman Excelerator 2.0 Handle.

How does a SQUEEGEE work?

The squeegee is the professional window cleaner’s ultimate tool! Once a window or glass surface has been agitated with a window cleaning solution and scrubber, the squeegee is then used to create a gentle seal to the glass, which is then pulled to effectively remove the solution, along with any loosened debris for a streak-free finish.

Don’t forget about those frames! Keep a window cleaning towel or sponge handy to remove water build up near the corners, sills or frame. Another great tip is if your squeegee is leaving behind streaks, it might be time to grab a fresh strip of squeegee rubber.

Selecting the Best Squeegee

Selecting the best squeegee is dependent on several factors, the main one simply being personal preference. Keep in mind what types of jobs you’ll be tackling. Will you be doing residential, storefronts or larger commercial jobs? Are you a fan of straight pulls or fanning?

Most professional window cleaners appreciate it when it’s super easy and fast to change out the squeegee rubber. Fast channel changing is also imperative. Material also comes into play; squeegees come in aluminum, brass and stainless steel. See what feels right to you!

The best squeegee will feel like an extension of your arm, be comfortable in your hand, and keep your wrist and arm feeling fresh. We can make tons of suggestions to get you started, but it is ultimately up to your personal preference and what tools help you perform at your best.

Another important factor to consider is what kind of material you want to work with. Complete squeegees come in a variety of materials, including brass, stainless steel, and plastic, and also offer fixed or swivel action options. Swivel squeegees, such as Wagtail, offer greater flexibility on the glass when working with extension poles or fanning.

When should I change my Squeegee rubber

You should change out your rubber once you notice performance issues such as streaks or when there is no longer a sharp edge. There is no set period of time as it differs for everyone. Some change their rubber daily or every other day, others weekly or less frequently. It’s going to depend on several factors. As a general rule of thumb, if it’s not producing perfect or near perfect results, it’s time to change your rubber. Regardless, your squeegee should glide across the window effortlessly.

Proper squeegee maintenance can also extend the life of it. Be sure to wipe your squeegee clean after use. It should be stored flat in a dry environment at room temperature. Squeegee rubber especially should not be kept in extreme temperatures; consider storing it in a container. Both Ettore Master Rubber and Maykker Soft Rubber, for example, come with reusable storage containers but you can also use any container of your own. Improper storage can most definitely lead to premature wearing in your squeegee rubber.

How do i select a Squeegee

To effectively tackle various window washing tasks, it's advisable to have a range of squeegee channels in different sizes at your disposal. Flexibility between brands also allows you to mix and match some channels and squeegee handles. Ensure compatibility by double-checking when combining components from different brands. Having diverse options readily available is a definite advantage as a window cleaner.

Consider a specialty squeegee as you can make full use of two or more window cleaning tools in one tool. Combination tools are time-savers, some allow you to wet and squeegee the window without changing tools while others you can switch from scrubber to squeegee with one hand. They are even more beneficial when paired with an extension pole.

More on squeegee handles

The best squeegee handle is one that fits comfortably in your hand and enables you to work without your hand, wrist, or arm growing fatigued throughout the day. Most handles are made of sturdy plastic, brass, stainless steel, aluminum, or even a mix of materials. You can choose between fixed or swivel handles, which is beneficial for working with extension poles.

Adjustable handles can come in handy for many different situations you’ll run into on the job. The Moerman Excelerator 2.0 handle, for example, is available in a range of angles including -20, -5, 10, 25, and 40 which can help eliminate the need for additional detailing.

Many handles also feature some kind of rubberized handle for increased grip and comfortability. You’ll hear the word “ergonomic” used frequently when it comes to squeegee handles. The goal of an ergonomic handle is to make it as comfortable and efficient as possible for the end user.

more on squeegee channels

Your squeegee channel is going to hold the squeegee rubber. Note that all of our complete squeegees will include one blade of rubber already installed. Squeegee channels are either considered standard or wide-body.

Standard channels are usually lighter and thinner while wide-body channels are heavier and longer. A standard squeegee channel is the classic choice and is compatible with round top squeegee rubber.

Sorbo is best-known for their reliable and efficient wide-body channels. A widebody channel, such as Sörbo, will use flat squeegee rubber, also known as T-top rubber blades. Other brands do have wide-body channels. The Ettore Super Squeegee Channel is also a popular wide-body option.

You can also use clipped or clip-less channels. As the names suggest, “clipped" channels use end clips which hold the rubber in place while clip-less channels do not have any clips.
