What do you do with a customer like this?

I’ve been giving this guy bargain basement prices for three months. The storefront I posted about a week ago that had the film on it was supposed to be my key to the work at the other properties he owns.

I drove by the original account today and this is what he had installed to block Sun.

So what do you say or do about it? Do i just write him off? It seems that a guy as old as he is and owns as much property as he supposedly does would have already had a window washer he used by now. Maybe this type of crap is why he doesn’t.

He’s given his storefront retail business the aura of an abandoned building.

I’m guessing someone talked him into/sold him on this.

Take him by his fragile little hand, and introduce him to a new word for his vocabulary… "Blight."
Better yet “Urban Blight.”

Because thats what his business has become.

And incidentally, knowing what an ‘easy sell’ this guy is,
I’m bummed to hear you have been giving him bargain basement prices.

The screen is on there with self tappers at every intersection of the window frame. The sun will kill that stuff in one summer then what? He’ll have shreds hanging off his window frame. Never heard of tint douche bag?

I was only giving him the bargain because he said he had so much more work I could have.
Lesson learned; price stays real regardless, every time. Unless something is in writing for multiple places, I’m not discounting like that again.

I’d use my favorite 4 letter word, “Next”. Then find an easier job that paid better. Jmo

I see…

Chose Your Adventure:
“If you hook me up, I’ll get you a ton of business.”

“I have a bunch of properties, I’ll use you for them ALL.”

“Pulease. Best price. I have you come to my house too.”

“We also own restaurant across the street, how much for both?”

lol

I’d give one last try at “dude, look at your shit…”
“It looks like Detroit.”

“C’mon, lets be real here.” :smirk:

That is funny cuz I did his house and charged him 80 bucks for like 12 Windows and screens. You could see his mental calculator going. … but you only charge a dollar a pane on my store… next customer won’t get naive me.

I found this joker my third day in business and apparently he saw me coming.

I mean why not just cover them with plywood?

Yeah, never fall for the BS. Experienced (but manipulative) business owners know how to negotiate the best price. And I never fall for the lies about more work. And fyi, I won’t do a house for less than $150. It’s just not worth it.

Also, and this may be the most important point of all, I can’t tell from the narrow frame of your photos but this neighborhood looks like it might be a bit dodgy. If that’s the case, try going to the BEST PART OF TOWN, and distribute some cards. The poorer the business, the more they will try to hassle you over price. And the more they will complain about every aspect of your service. Successful people are happy (not complaining) people.

Yeah the neighborhood in the first pic is “a bit dodgy” as you put it lol. I couldn’t leave any tools outside, and I was asked for change once or twice… an hour! The other one is actually ok.

you sound unreasonably angry

I disagree… He seems to be taking his hit with a smile.

We can talk/give ideas about approach… But we can’t fault his attitude.

And your feedback is helpful how? I just started three months ago and this is one of my bigger accounts up until now. Excuse me for being a little irritated that I lost the work due to factors beyond my control.

Just say “No, I was hoping you might have a dollar so I could get some coffee.”

And learn this one: “I can’t let you borrow my phone because the company doesn’t allow it.” You can blame a lot on “The Company”

Cuz you ain’t going to catch no crack head.

Oh, and when this business calls you back after they take down that screen, triple your price. The screens will fog up those windows pretty nice within a few months and you already know he’s not going to get on a schedule.

i’m pointing out that your perspective is all wrong, what goves you the right to insult him? did you have a contract? does he have the right to do buisiness as he sees fit just like you do? if you have only been in business for three months then learn the lesson well now: don’t be entitled, it will hurt you.

Of course he’s got the right to do whatever he wants with his business. And I already said I learned a lesson right? Get back under your bridge.

so you posted this topic because you wanted others to interact with you, but when someone provides feedback you don’t like you need to put them down?

My verbal response 'that looks wonderful."
Often conflicts with my mental tingling, that say “are you Fukien kidding me?”

I think that’s what’s happening here.

Nice!

I’ve lived in a couple neighborhoods where I got hit up a couple times a week. Eventually (I’m a slow learner), I could recognize what was coming. The minute they said “Hey man…” I would jump in with “Hey, can I have a couple dollars, man?” Boom. Problem solved every time. Just ask first. Then you win.

It never fails now, and that is my go-to method.
