Discouraging employees doing jobs "next door" without me knowing

I think this falls into conflict of interest. I’ll have to look more into it. But if you have that in your employee handbook
I need to put one together myself. That could be terms for fire

Look up your local state and city laws.

Before you just start having your guys sign a “non-compete” you better check with your states laws. If you ask ANY employee in my state to sign a non-compete they have to sign it before starting work (as in the morning of their first day). If you ask them after they have started (even at the end of the first day) you must offer them some kind of incentive as exchange for signing a non-compete. And make sure it is a true non-compete. There are a lot of companies out there that have a non-compete on their website that they just made up to “sound” official, but in reality is garbage. Also, have a lawyer go over whatever you come up with. Most states don’t allow a no-compete agreement to go 2 year or longer without the company asking for it proving that 2 years is absolutely necessary. I had my own lawyer look at one someone tried to make me sign and she laughed at it!!

And…if they are doing jobs on the side in your companies uniforms, even if they use their own equipment, depending on your states laws you may be held liable if anything negative happens. Most laws state that if you use an outside contractor without their own insurance everything reverts back to the company they are working for and if they are wearing your uniforms it will be assumed that they are working for you.

I love the 10% bonus idea. But after I started using TCF I don’t have an easy way to keep track of it.
Had a guy call me today to ask about a part time position I advertised. He has all his own tools, pressure washer etc. He told me he wanted to work with me part time until PW and WC season hits. Did I hire him?NO!!!

Pay them a real wage???

My one guy makes close to $90K. Greedy if you ask me going for jobs on the side. Others make $30 - $40/hour.

I think they are paid well.

You have a technician who makes $90K? How many hours a week is he working? How much glass is he cleaning. . . ?

Been around the window cleaning business for quite some time
I find it hard to belive your paying your guy 90k. An here we are talking that he is doing route work for you. Really ?
Either he is really fast or your getting triple what Any window cleaning company has ever made doing route work

Is this the sales incentive you use? My father in law suggested doing this as well. You pay them the price of the job they land but only on reoccurring accounts and you pay them on the second cleaning. I suppose you could do half if it’s only a one time thing. This was my thinking for a sales guy. But it would be great as incentive for employees. As long as it doesn’t give them the idea to just go out on their own once they learn to sell.

I don’t have a guy soliciting for me. I do it all myself , but if I did yes that’s exactly what I would do. Half is even fair , but look at it this way

Yes to how An when you pay him the money shouldn’t come out of your pocket it has to be a paying job first. That’s the clause … you get your incentive bonus after first payment.
That’s the way my old boss did it for me.

I’ve picked up jobs then right before first cleaning they decided against it., but most of the time I’d tried to clean right on the spot

You could never know if an when someone will go on ther own it is always a possibility

It’s not route work, it’s residential window clng. He works from
8-5:30 or 6 Mon. - Fri. + Sat. 9-1

My bullshit radar went off and even blew a few springs. :-/

here’s an approach you could consider.
where i am anyone who sells goods or services in peoples homes or basiclly without a storefront requires a direct sellers liscense. the liscense application is reviewed and a performance bond must be submitted for the company, this usually costs upwartds of $800 and ANY person that talks to customers about prices must be liscensed under the company here its i think $200 ech.
there can be fines for working without the liscense it suppoesd to be carried at all times so it can be presented if a customer asks to see it.
if this similar in your area make sure you are properly documented and then have meeting.
inform the staff that you received a warniing from whoever it is that monitors this in your area and that there is significant risk to them AND YOUR BUSINESS if unlicensed people communicate regarding sales or estimates.
when approached techs should respond, well we’ed love to do your windows but i’m not licensed to give you pricing, i’ll have someone call you right away.
make sure they get a refferal fee.
