0000 steel wool disaster

Well I thought 0000 steel wool didn’t scratch glass. I was cleaning a townhouse that had some pretty old windows. Some of them had pretty good water staining so I grabbed some steel wool and went to town. I noticed the scratches when I was checking the glass for errors. Anyone else had this happen?

Are you 100% sure you got 0000? Was any of it rusted?

What kind of windows? Brand?

I’ve yet to scratch any using 0000 steel wool … Could they have had some type of coating?are we talking outside windows?maybe they were already scratched and you just uncovered them so to speak.

I put scratches in a brand new hi end window when I tested it. I think the glass industry likes to call it architectural glass. I believe it was tempered. It wasn’t Anderson. Some of the newer glass is highly susceptible to scratching.

PS
Higher performance glass is an other term they like. If we scratch it we are wrong because the manufacturers are forbidding us to use scrapers and anything else that scratches their new hi end glass products… crazy but true.

I did check and yes it was quad 0 steel wool. I did not notice any rust colored water when I got it wet. I had just started using that piece.

As far as the brand, I’m not sure. They are pretty old windows. Old townhomes. Don’t think the windows have ever been updated.

Glad to hear it’s old glass. :grinning::grinning::grinning:

Why’s that?

Probably too late to check, but did it have an Old Castle Glass mark in the corner?

That sucks Sorry to hear it.

How are you going to handle this issue with the owner?

The owner lives in California and I’m in Texas. Told the realtor about and said he would look at it. He told he wasn’t too concerned. Just wanted the windows cleaned.

100% seen 0000 scratch glass

Brand new piece. I drink coffee every morning and stare at it.

Wow, I have never had a problem with it, as long as you are honest to the owner you should be just fine  :ok_hand:

I told the realtor that I wasn’t quite sure if I did it or not. I had done almost every other window with steel wool and have not seen any scratches. These windows were pretty nasty.

Were the scratches in swirly patterns or whatever pattern you were using?

They do look consistent with the motions I use.

Until you run into that one customer who is totally not fine. It is a risk that we take when cleaning years of debris and contaminants off glass.

Yes, but never with older glass. My experience with older glass is that
anything just shy of using a hammer works fine.

Is it possible that a piece of sand or some other debris got trapped in the steel wool and that is what scratched the window?
