You got this

You got this…

How bad to you really want “success”, some of you say you want to be successful in business but you keep making excuses, STOP! “The only way to be successful is to want it as bad as you want to breathe” Stop and think about what I just wrote for a minute… Now we all made excuse in the past why we could not be successful, no money for advertising,no money for new bidding programs,no motivation to go knock on doors, footballs on I’ll do it later and the list goes on and on ( I used to be the same way) As I said the excuses that we used are in the past, My excuses are yesterday, please put the past in the past then you will be on the path to success!
Today is a new day to succeed. “The only way to be successful is to want it as bad as you want to breathe”

Share your ideas and advice.

You got me all fired up about working less next year! Thanks man!!

If all you’ve ever wanted was to get bitten by a radioactive spider and get superpowers, you might as well grow your business until that happens.

First day I went out trying to get storefront work was pretty discouraging (knew it would be, thanks to the heads-up from the folks here…so it was tolerable). Got one lame $20.00 account and a bunch of no’s. In the afternoon I went home to sulk…,but decided to print and distribute some resi fliers instead. I distributed 50 fliers in a small neighborhood (all I had printed) and went home feeling like I had at least done SOMETHING. Two weeks later got a call for a resi window & pressure washing job from one of those fliers. Then the guy tells me he’s the president of a medium sized company nearby and I get the commercial account, which will also lead to some pressure washing work.

Moral of the story…Even if you don’t FEEL like it, do SOMETHING!

I think this is gonna end up being one of those go-to pick-me-up threads. Thanks for starting it!

… Have you ever almost drowned, or had all you air cut off? What happens is, you panic.
Life for those few minutes is nothing more than thrashing around, all rationality lost, grabbing at anything,
the body and mind panic and do everything to survive, even kill someone else.
I would prefer to bring something else to my business than survival.

Yea and Yes. Having the urgency for that breathe is undeniably one of the worst positions to be in, hair grows back, the passion you have for that breathe should be the same passion that you have to succeed. I’m not talking about mere survival I’m talking about success.Have that burning feeling that comes from deep down thats tells you that your better then this, your born to greatness.Don’t settle for Good when it should be Great. Push your self beyond the excuses, create opportunity for greatness and success.

Push your self beyond the excuses, create opportunity for greatness and success.

It’s amazing how many are in this business,
with a map to proceed in this business,
in an effort to ‘succeed’ in this business,
…so they can get out of this business.

If I won the Lotto tonight, I’d be right here, talking to you schlubs tomorrow.

Do I like being successful with my business? Kind of.
“Pride in ownership”/“Born and bred”/“Love my job” and all that…

As a newbie, coming from a fire service background, I totally follow you on this. My problem: I’m at the stage where I want to be able to just go out and enjoy the feeling of having done a great job, but I still have that pressure of having to worry about where the next gig is coming from. I don’t want to hire a bunch of people and sit behind s desk…I want to have a steady one guy and (sometimes) his wife or a helper kind of business. I absolutely love the instant gratification that come with watching something go from nasty to perfectly clean…there’s nothing like it! I just want to have a lot of it to do!..That’s where the stress and the need for being a go-getter comes from, I guess.

Good attitude to start with, Jesse.
Eventually, you may be more interested in making your customers happy than making yourself happy.
Then you’ll try to figure out ways to earn more in a day.
It’s simply the “evolution” that necessitates what Steve brought out.

Jesse stop…think about what you said for a minute “My problem”…you said your at the stage where you want to be able to just go out and enjoy the feeling of having done a great job…then do it! The pressure of worrying about where the next job is coming from is taking away from the job your doing, your not giving that 110% to the task at hand, did you see what I said your not giving the 110% on the task at hand because your worrying about where the next job will come from Stop and Focus on the task at hand and the worrying about the work will solve its self.Trust me right now you think your doing a “great” job but most likely its mediocre to good if it was great you would not be worrying about where your next client was coming from, they would be knocking down your door your phone would be blowing up!

Give every task your full attention. Jesse give 110% to everything you do dont settle for good, be great. I want you to understand to I’m not saying you wont have to put 110% in to marketing your company, but if you focus on the the task at hand…Wow your world will change faster then you know.

Go get them Jesse!

I hear you…and I DO keep getting jobs…just gotta stop worrying about it! Everything is still so new to me that I worry too much about the details and stress about it.

Thanks for the great advice…This place is the best!

Thanks for the input Dan. I should have phrased it differently…I love making my customers happy, so I stress about any little thing that may be wrong.

EXAMPLE: I had a guy working with me on a job recently and it took a lot longer than we expected. The customer was OBVIOUSLY ready for us to be done and gone, so I wasn’t as picky as I would like to be about the touch-up. While the customer was writing the check I noticed that one window he had done looked like garbage, but it was up high, I didn’t want to be “too critical”, etc, etc. I lost sleep over it and figured I had lost a customer…The next week I got a $600.00 job from her friend, who said she wouldn’t even talk to anyone else about her windows because of how great of a job we had done! Just gotta chill and enjoy the work, I guess.

You will find that you care more about what the job looks like than most customers. Perfectionism is good only to a point, then it gets in the way of progress and causes undue stress.

Very true…finding that balance is pretty tough. I started with a trash-out service in '06 that kind of morphed into my window business, and that was really easy for a perfectionist…window cleaning is quite a bit different. Thanks for all the helpful input guys.

I agree Derryll with you I learned awhile back from Caleb. There is a point in the process that to much detail is to “much detail” when it comes to what a client see’s. The point that I’m trying to forward is “you need to put uncommon effort into a common task”. Don’t just be good, have the burning passion to be great and a world of opportunity will arise.

Dan is right!
“we all made excuses in the past why we could not be successful, no money for advertising, no money for new bidding programs, no motivation to go knock on doors…”

An employer told me once, after my telling him why I was late or why I hadn’t performed a task properly or whatever reason I gave him at that moment for not being up to par,

He said, “Young man, I’m going to tell you something that I hope you never forget.
Excuses are very easy to come by but very hard to live by.”

I’ve never forgotten those words of wisdom. :smirk:
