Woke up this morning to this temperature!

It’s been very difficult scheduling jobs the last little while. So far I’ve been managing to get my storefronts done but the resi’s have been put on hold, mostly because they’re 2 stories and you need to be on the porch roof to do the second floor. I’d pole them if they were casements but they’re Frenchies, YIKES!

eric, nice to know you were thinking of kevin, mark and mike and not me :frowning: joking… yeah this weather is less then fun, had to work a full day today and yesterday, ah well least i know it likely wont get much worse this winter, infact there have only been a few days below -10 that ive had to work all year, and springs around the corner!

im just glad im not in north bay, you must be dying…

as much as id like to be all like ‘im better then other wc’ers in the area, i can use this weather to get jobs from them’ the other side of me says ‘its really cold, i dont want to be outside for a minute more then i need to’, i have a hard time being motivated to get NEW work in this weather, although i always punctually service my existing clients regardless of weather…do you get that battle within you too eric, and others?

as long as its above -10 its ok, but below that and with wind especially, i just get done what needs to be done… if its above 0, thats when ill worry about getting work…

funny that at the coldest time of the year, we’re going for a little vacation up north, where it will likely get to -30 - -40 at night…to visit my wifes family…at least the snowboarding, snowmobiling etc makes up for it somewhat…

I hear ya there Bud. Last Tuesday was decent so I committed myself to staying out the whole day and try to get more work. I ended up doing two extra jobs.

I don’t mind the cold so much (unless it’s windy), it’s all this damn snow and ice that’s getting to me.

pretty much all winter ive seen at least one day a week of near -30C, you get used to it, but add wind and its a whole different ball game! sorry Contrast i left ya out of my list of GTA Window cleaners…i keep forgetting your in that area too!
motivation is tough when its cold, but i get new clients that way, so it pays off, but a full day out in the -30 will suck the life outta you.

Today was bitterly cold.

It was hard to work, and I had to take a lot of coffee breaks. When I was doing some 30 ft polling, the wind was really making it hard to do a good job.

Today it didn’t get above -11 during the day with a -23 Celsius. Tomorrow, I’ll wake up to -19 with a -26 windchill. Friday more snow!!!

Now they say spring will be late, and March will be snowier than normal.

C’mon guys those are nice temps!! lol I woke up this morning to -25C with a -36C windchill…ya pretty cold, tomorrow morning suppose to feel colder in the morning then warm up for the weekend. This winter has been so tiring!
its 7:38 pm now and its -19C out, and feels like -28C with the windchill! brrrrr!

Hey Eric

Yeah I know I can’t beat you for the lowest temperature. Did you get a lot of snow up there? We got almost 80cms in February so far.

Mike>> we have hardly gotten any snow at all in Feb. so far. We got tons in Dec, and January, but every time it warms up it melts then freezes in the deep freeze again, and every time a storm system blows through it usually hits the GTA and up to about Muskoka and not any more north. I’m ok with less snow, but we are left with lots of ice everywhere, and rock hard snowbanks. Its been horrible trying to sell residential window cleaning, its soo cold its the last thing on anyones mind for their house, and the ground is got enough ice that it makes the surfaces slippery and uneven. Its so up and down its ridiculous! like on the weekend it was only -5C and then -1C and then today right back down in the DEEP freeze! I cannot wait till next month when things will hopefully start to warm up…then once April comes around i’ll be wearing shorts lol

I think of you guys in the GTA every day when I watch Breakfast Television!

It would be pretty cool if I could get them as a window cleaning customer and then clean their windows in the morning.

i agree, that would be awesome, or a job or two right across the street, then id email them to look out their window at the brave window cleaner washing windows in the freezing weather. lol how is the website coming mike?

Yup, it sure was a pane (pun intended) cleaning windows downtown this morning. I was surprised when I got a call to do a residential ASAP. I went to take a look at the house. Damn, three stories with snow and ice all over the place. No way I’d be able to do this job safe. Had to pass.

I’ve got to pick up 4000 fliers on Friday but I don’t know when I should start sending them out. Too early (Still cold and snowy) and it could be a big waste. Leave it too late and the competition moves in. Hmmm…decisions, decisions. LOL

I’m trying to decide when to get mine out too Mark, timing is everything. Although last year I know my competition did not put out any fliers, so maybe i’ll be lucky again this year. I Figure I should be good to start getting some out by mid to end of March, as once April swings around the calls will start coming in (obviously as long as the weather warms). Since i personally hand deliver there house to house, once I get busy i’ll have a lot harder time doing fliers.

Nice to see ya post on the forum again!

CrazY : Why don’t you hire someone to do the flier delivering for you, and train them in the way you’ve used to secure clients? That way you can free up your own time for things that are more profitable for your business.

Kevin: i may end up doing just that this year once the $$ starts coming in, but as it stands things are just too tight monetarily.

Sorry to rub it in, but it was Beautiful here today 67 and sunny - actually had to turn the air on in the van. It’s actually been really nice for the last couple of weeks (right around 60).
I’m originally from Canada and even though I only live about 4 hours south of the Canadian border in South Eastern Washington - it’s a totally different climate. I don’t miss those Canadian winters one bit.

Jason>> 67 degrees…thats the temperature I keep in my house overnight…I’d love to be cleaning windows in that temp this time of year…Where are you from in Canada? BC?

I’m originally from southern Alberta (Lethbridge).
Well, it is suppose to be cooling down here over the next week to 60

I have family in Lethbridge, Calgary and Medicine Hat as well as Edmonton…cousins. The rest of my extended family is in Northern Ontario and the Ottawa Area.

What made you decide to go south to the US?

What do you think – the weather;) No seriously, the weather did factor into it. My wife’s originally from Arizona and she put up with those terrible Canadian winters for 5 years. I was working for my Father in a high end retail furniture store and we just wanted/needed a change and knew we didn’t want to spend the rest of our life in Lethbridge complaining about the weather. My wife graduated from High School here in Kennewick and all her family lives here - so that’s pretty much what brought us here. I thought I’d start my own window cleaning business here until I found a “real job” or found something better - it’s been 7 years and I still haven’t yet
I love this business and although I’m still relatively small compared to many companies out there - I make very good $ and I love what I do - why change.

Just a pic for our southern state window cleaners, this picture was taken in Dwight Ontario, a few hours north of Toronto. there is much more snow here in this pic than there is where i live in North Bay. Just thought some of you might like to see this. I have a couple more pics that show its not just a crazy high snow bank, but that the snow is actually very deep in more open areas.
