Window washing vs window cleaning

Hi , I am the wife of a window cleaner. I would like to comment about window cleaning vs window washing. The difference is in the results. Ones perspective, use of knowledge and techniques will determine the final outcome of wlindows being just washed or cleaned. The trained eye will look for and see things that most people may not even notice.

Welcome, window cleaner’s wife.
Yes, there is your own perspective which may prompt you to present yourself and service one way or the other. And more importantly, the perspective of those who may require your service. Google Trends has information on what terms people use in searching for us in various parts of the country/world.

Although I prefer and use the terms Window Cleaner/Window Cleaning (east coast raised/trade learned in the Denver area). Now working in the Dallas area, I do hear the term Window Washer/Window Washing from those inquiring about my services. I think the terms, can relate to the age, area raised/living and what term is most common to those saying it.

This argument gets debated from time-to-time. I prefer “Window Cleaning” because I like the way it sounds. But I can’t honestly say that there is really a difference. Even the dictionary definition does not really distinguish the two as verbs:

Wash - "cleanse by dipping, rubbing, or scrubbing in water or some other liquid"
Clean - “to make free from dirt; unsoiled; unstained”

I have a friend with a window cleaning business. He gets loud and angry when he hears someone call him a “window washer”. He makes himself look foolish when he plays this semantics game.

IS loud and angry a joke lol

I wasn’t talking about you. Do you do that too?

I prefer window cleaner. I do wash the glass but I will do more than simply wash. As mentioned it is a fine point lost on or not really noticed by non window cleaners.

… Well our mothers know the difference.

“Did you wash your hands young man?”

… 'Yeah, ma I did"

… “then how come they’re still dirty?”

So washing windows doesn’t necessarily mean they are clean…

“You can call me Johnny, or you can call me Sonny, or you can call me RJ, or RRJ, or RJJ”. Let them call you what they will, do your job and they will call you “good”, and they will call you when they need…

You said friend, I am glad to know you have more than 1 lol haha

Some could argue that you didn’t really wash them then. But I’m just arguing for the fun of it. I really don’t care.

just going through with the motions doesn’t make them clean. you can wash poorly and you can clean poorly. you can wash them properly or you can clean them properly.

I just wish that customers would use just one term that way I would know the exact terminology to use in my website for seo. I try to throw both terms in as often as I can. If you dont call yourself a window washer you will lose out on customers that searched for it

Well…

anyone ever read 7 habits of highly effective people? You are branding yourself by how you see it. a customer might see you in a different paradigm. being a carpet cleaner, I often hear customers call a vacuum a sweeper. drives me nuts. it doesnt sweep, it vacuums. but thats how the customer sees it.

i’m sure they are far and few in between but i’m positive that there are people out there that call getting their house washed, house cleaning. and maybe they call house cleaning, house keeping.

basically just saying not to brand yourself that way. see things through your customers paradigm and dont be closed minded about it.

I warsh dem winders right nice!

That’s what she said.

I agree with this comment in a way but would like to add that i think of window washing as someone using windex, papertowels, or newspapers to clean a window honestly.
