Who here does cold calling?

A friend of mine owns a fertilizing lawn care company. They have about 5 sales guys from Jan-April hitting the phones 5 days a week from about 4pm-8pm. They buy a phone list and go to town. Their sales goals for each person is $3,000 a week. Do the math and that adds up for those three months. They do really well with this and it got me thinking. Does anyone here do that here?

His company is a little different as its reoccurring revenue for residential ( 7 applications a season ) and almost everyone either fertilizes their lawn themselves or has someone else do it. Not everyone cleans their carpet. What kind of ideas or things could you do to make this work for the cleaning industry? Especially in the residential side of work?

Buy yourself a call list and BE that sales person? Great for the winter down time if you have that… I know I do

Yea, Im just curious how effective it would be in our industry… I know it works for commercial, but residential I’m not sure how well that would go.

As a potential residential customer I hate cold calling be it in person at the front door or by phone.

Many people hate unsolicited phone calls even more - as they generally have not signed up to any list but are somehow on one and hate getting calls.

I run my business like i would like to be approached myself… Im sure if your a large un caring company it could work, but if your a small company, local guy… i dont think it would go so well.

Do you do cold door sales? How do they go?

We do some door sales. Its just a number game. The more doors you hit the more jobs you land. We leave a lot of postcards on peoples doors and that works well to.

I currently cold call for window cleaners in North America. If you are interested, send me a private message.

Our window cleaning company was all about the phone room. It was the main focus 9 months of the year. We only called existing clients or those that had called in and expressed an interest previously. Depending on the month each person would book between 2 - 4k a day.

The phone works, it can be your best sales tool. If you wanted $10,000 a day in work everyday, I can’t really think of any other better way of getting it.

I couldn’t imagine doing it cold like your friends company… That must have been a tough job.

Yes. Window cleaning. House washing. Gutter cleaning. And roof cleaning.

Not sure what the weather is like right now out your way, but if it’s still manageable I would call all of my clients about gutter cleaning, then offer ice dam prevention installation (simple, easy since you have ladders anyway)

Tomorrow I will be calling as many as my customers as I can and offering them dryer vent cleaning, I’m going to test that out this winter and see if I can get that extra $$ comin in

I want to be carful because we also bought into a pest control company a few weeks ago. We are going to be pushing those services hard starting feb. So I don’t want to hit them with to many different things in a short period.

I would say it would be reasonable to call them once maybe twice a year max.

Spring - Hey Mrs Smith, our schedule is filling up fast would you like to get on our list for this year?

Fall - Hey Mrs Smith, we will be performing some gutter cleanings in your area the firs week of November. Can I get you on the schedule again this year?

January is a good time to start thinking about a campaign. Calling your customers from 2014 is a good start.

You’re absolutely right. Anytime you can make contact with a potential client-by phone or in person-it’s considered cold calling.
