What makes some glass hydrophobic and some glass hydrophilic?

Just as asked. I’m curious as to why some glass is hydrophobic and other glass is hydrophilic.

Some panes are hydrophilic at the top and hydrophobic at the bottom. I dont quite understand that.

Some panes seem exactly the same from the same manufacturer yet display differences in how they take on water.

Interested in some clarification.

i believe it is always some type of contaminate on the glass, outgasing or creeping from the gasket or frame , the screen etc. herewe regularly see hydrophillic glass on the slider not covered with screen while the screen side is very hydrophobic. also a good scrub with bronze wool can reduce the hydrophobia, i assume by removing the film.

In the case today the top half of the pane was hydrophilic while the bottom half (the rained on half) was hydrophobic. I’ll see if I can snap a pic tomorrow.

I saw a video a while back that showed bronze wool on a doodle bug thing on a wet window then water poled, it seemed to work.
