What do you use to accept Credit Cards?

Right now, I accept Paypal transactions. But I am wanting to accept credit cards when I’m in clients homes. Concerned about fees, hidden fees, etc fees wittling away profits.
Anyone here suggest using ‘The Square’ or something like it?

I just started accepting Pay Pal this year. I let customers know that they charge 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction. Otherwise it is cash or check. I have had three customers over 8 years ask if I take credit card, so not a priority for me.

@Garry Three out of my last six clients asked about and used Paypal…I will have to start adding the fee…I wasn’tready for the demand and didn’t know the fee structure.
I have had one customer ask about taking cradit cards…they didn’t want to do Paypal.
Talked to a Lawn Guy today, not Kalfas, his crews don’t take any payments from customers…this guy only does online billing and payments. He says it saves him a ton of headaches. He said it’s easier for his clients too.

The guys that are using Square have any idea what the total fees on each transaction? Any hidden cost?
Does your bank charge anything to deal with it? Or, am I misunderstanding how these things work?
I am very ignorant of all this. I have been to the website but they never come right out and say they are going to screw you out of your money.

Do you process the card info in the office or does QB have a card reader too?

Thank you.

We don’t do a lot of credit card transactions, but we have used square, PayPal and QuickBooks. QuickBooks is by far my favorite. The fees are slightly lower than Square and I think it’s easier for bookkeeping. I like seeing the amount we were paid plus the fee when I look at the records. There’s no other calculations or numbers I need to enter into QuickBooks like I did with Square.

With Square, for example, on a $100 invoice, you’ll see $97.25 deposited in your bank account. Then you have to enter a transaction for $2.75 as a credit card fee. With QuickBooks, when you look at transactions to review for your bank account, you would see the $100 payment on one line and a payment to Intuit on another line for the credit card fees.

Another thing that’s easy with QuickBooks is that when you email the invoice, you can turn on the option for credit card payment or bank transfer (with only a 50 cent fee) so for me that simplifies the whole process even more. We don’t have a card reader for QuickBooks. It’s so rare that we have someone who wants to swipe a card that’s it’s not something we worry about. We either factor the higher percentage charge of entering the card information into the price and enter it on the app or email the invoice.

I’m sure there’s a lot of opinions, but this is what we’ve found to work best for us.

I use PayPal Here with a mobile card swiped for the phone. Fees aren’t unreasonable, but not as nice as cash or a check.
I’ve yet to meet my residential customers face to face as they are all second or third homes.

PayPal will let you email an invoice to them. The invoice provides a link for them to go to and enter their credit card info securely. They don’t need to have PayPal themselves. The funds are in your PayPal account immediately. The invoice still has all of your mailing info, so they can send you a check if they choose.

Good to have options.

quickbooks you just enter the numbers, no reader required it works very well and handles the card fee perfectly. thru tcf and stripe i enter the card details and it works fine but does not handle the fee as well, some internal bookeping required.
i find it better to use tcf because it shows me on the calendar which jobs are paid/unpaid. and of course qbo has no real crm or field service functionality

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply.
@cactus27 I used to use QuickBooks, a long time ago, I will probably start using it at some point, very useful.
For now, I will look into Square so I can at least offer the credit card option. If there really isn’t much demand over the next year I will discontinue it.
Thanks again everyone for you input,
Dee
