Tis the season: Window Paint Tip

Ok, I’ve never done window paint removal, however, I have a cash advance branch that had asked for me to do these windows. How long does it typically take to do something like these windows. I’m thinking $75 for this paint removal with cleaning. Just for a reference, the large windows are approx 32 sq ft. Thanks
Josh

I usually just tell people my labor rate to do things like that. Paint , tint or any type of scraping sometimes it can go smooth other times it’s takes a little more effort . Jmo. I just say I get 60 an hour to take paint off like this. It shouldn’t take me more than 2 hours. For this . That’s exactly what I would tell them for that job if it were me. They have cash so it should be a problem
That’s just me though because I don’t really care if they say yes or no
Oh if there a monthly customer I’ll cut my labor rate down to 40 an hour for scraping

That should take you about an hour to scrape off.

Btw a buddy of mine Said he used oven cleaner this year , an it work awesome . I ain’t saying use it just saying … I haven’t done much paint removal lately seems like no one does it anymore , but I use to use straight ammonia in a small pump up. The Sprayway sounds cool havnt tried that yet

If its inside you should ask for a little more because of the care you have to take not to make a mess. Find out if its water or ammonia based paint, and use either to soak it before you scrape. I’d charge around the same amount as mike.

Are they a regular customer? How old is the paint? Old paint can be harder or easier to take off, but most of the time it’s harder if it’s been baking in the sun all year vs just put on in the last month. With the snow man it looks like this might be christmas paint so should be fairly easy.

Price is up to you, but for me, if it was a regular customer, I’d probably take that paint off for $20. It would probably add maybe 15-20 minutes to scrape (I’d pole scrape the upper window too). It just doesn’t add that much time and for a regular customer, it’s something that they’d appreciate.

If they’re not a regular customer, then I might go 40.

Note: most of the customers here don’t really care if you get every speck off the sills they just want the paint off the windows. If the customer wants their sills to look like new and I have to break out the goo gone and I have to ladder up to detail everything, then yeah, I’d probably charge 75-100. At that point it becomes a construction clean.

Ya Mike good point I can’t understand why people let the painer put it in the inside. Ya know it was the painters idea cause of cold weather probually. I only seen it once on the inside. When I was working for Troy , a diner did there inside. Taking it off was a nightmare the mess everywhere was crazy… But at least we were warm

Yeah, I’ve only seen that once. But regardless, if you use the foaming cleaner, it will help contain the mess. Especially if the paint wants to flake.

Oh, and it’ll keep the noise down too. There’s nothing worse that knowing that you’re making tortured noises while someone is trying to eat their lunch on the other side of the glass.

It is a new regular customer, the Christmas paint is on the inside, the rest is on the outside. The detailing isn’t an issue, the other 5 branches I clean have all had their paint removed and still have specs everywhere on the glass. This paint is OLD paint, I have it a test strip with sprayway and a swipe with my razor and it didn’t touch it. It was however -4 ° that day. May have had something to do with it.

Humm, then yeah probably charge more. But let the foam soak in and it might help.

If it’s really old paint, you might have to brute force scrape it.

Old thread but it seems to be that time of year again, but this is my first winter cleaning windows so I have a couple questions. Where do I buy sprayaway? And if they don’t want the window art taken off by the time I get there to do thier service, will the paint come off if I put regular solution (ammonia and palm olive) on the window and squeegee off?

You can get it at home depot, lowes, walmart, or wherever.

I’m not sure anyone uses ammonia as their default solution. It’ll definitely damage paint and remove window tint.

I use water + dawn and depending on the paint, I can sometimes clean over it. Lick your thumb and test a corner of the paint and see if it flakes off. Depending on the paint, you might be able to clean over it.

But most of the time, they’re paying big money for the paint and would rather you skip them during december.

Was just thinking about window paint removal the other day while talking to a store owner, who had some pretty amazing window paintings. What sort of price range do you charge for this (I’m sure there are plenty of variables)?
Thanks

Yeah, it really depends. Are the paintings airbrushed? How many layers are there? Is this a regular customer?

Airbrushed windows you can tell because if you lick your thumb and the paint doesn’t even smear then you’re going to have a lot of work in front of you.

If it’s regular paint, the number of layers comes into factor as well.

But you can add anywhere from $2-5 per window.

$2-5 per window what’s on that window a snow flake :scream:

Ha … Look at what I just found just now the one who paints my only removal . So glad they don’t do it on my stores. Although I do charge for it.
Those two windows $50. Takes half an hour . I mean if I got that kind of money for it I wouldn’t mind doing it , but nobody does it any more not on my routes at least.

I’ve done 100s back In the day. I never was innovative back then. I just did it the way they told me to.
Just put xtra ammonia in they said :man_facepalming:

It was a mess , used buckets of water an mix , An wouldn’t come off as easy as the new way do it

Although hardley anyone does it anymore , back then it seemed like everyone did it . I have 2 customers that do it, An unlike the guys I worked for I charge them. :man_facepalming:

These days small pump up straight ammonia , soap , spray dwell , an spray again

Likely the one job type I actually dislike. 1st week of January we have 1 week of this

At least it’s in doors. What’s your procedure ?
