Tilt-in Window cable

I had a first while cleaning a tilt-in window. As I started to clean the window I had to tilt the window in and as I started to lift the window up a little and tilt it in, the cable that holds the window in the channels “popped” out of the cable holder which holds the window so when you tilt the window it goes back into the channel. I was able to put the window in but the cable snapped up to the top of the channel. Is there a tool required so as to pull the cable down and insert the window back in place? The owner stated that they had other windows with the same problem. She said she would call for a window repair to come out and fix it so at least I knew it was not me. has anyone faced this issue and what was your outcome.

Just happened to me this week, actually. I inserted a screw driver into the notch to pull the spring down, then turned until it was open (like a “U”). Then you reinstall the sash by holding it horizontally and tilting one side higher to fit it in the frame. After that the hinges should fit into the notches fairly easily.

I’ve had that happen where the dry-rotted suspension cables and retention pins actually broke and the window became basically inoperable. I now check tilt-in windows for cheapo hardware and if they look or feel sketchy then I don’t mess with them.

I had one of these last year. It was very annoying and scary! It was like I could only pull down the window so far or it would pop back up. Very time consuming
