Just want to say that the Samuri BOAB has clear and multiple advantages over most BOAB’s currently on the market, it is a quality product, and Jared has done an awesome job researching, designing, and making the Samuri available. And I genuinely say, well done. This is a real step forward in BOAB design.

The Samuri as initial feedback is showing on this thread, and as Jared realistically expected, has become a really really good product for many (example = storefront guy’s love em), but leaves others still wanting something else.

Reading this thread lead me to think the following.

PolznBlades (Bob Hat) has often made two simple, but often overlooked observations about BOAB design in general.

Polz’n made these two general observations about he current generation of BOAB’s:

Disadvantage (Con) 1: Having both scrubbing device and squeegee on one side of the body slightly inhibits traditional window cleaning efficiency (small advantages add up).

Disadvantage (Con) 2: Having both scrubbing device and squeegee on one side of the body in a traditional window cleaning setting encourages unnecessary wear and tear to be concentrated on one side of the body (scrubbing vigorously and squeegeeing with one arm).

His preference is to separate scrubbing tool from squeegees, one on each side. Why? What is the advantage of having scrubber on one side of your body (waist) and squeegee on the other?

Advantage (Pro) 1: Having scrubbing device on one side of the body, and the squeegee on the other, saves frequent but small amounts of time putting one tool back and swapping over to the other. This therefore, slightly increases traditional window cleaning efficiency (multiple small time savings).

Advantage (Pro) 2: Having scrubbing device on one side of the body, and the squeegee on the other, discourages wear and tear being concentrated in joints on one side of the body, thereby decreasing the potential for overuse syndrome, but encouraging spreading of the load between two arms/limbs instead of one.

It becomes natural after a short amount of time (muscle memory) reaching simultaneously for your scrubber with one hand, and for your squeegee with the other. That both saves time and decreases fatigue.

Not downing the Samuri at all (it’s removable divider etc is brilliant), and I will repeat, that the Samuri BOAB has clear (and multiple) advantages over most BOAB’s currently on the market, it is a quality product, and Jared has done an awesome job. And I genuinely say, well done.

But this, I really think should considered (explored at least) in future designs by a simple separation of scrubber from squeegee into two separate products (belt systems). All in one BOAB’s are good, but the potential for the elimination of the disadvantages outlined above (overuse syndrome a common health problem in this industry) and the resulting increased efficiency is worth thinking about.

Good old Sorbo Sorenson had both the window cleaners efficency and well being in mind when he designed his system. Eliminating labor, bending over, with his bucket on a stand (BOAS?) bigger squeegees, bigger scrubbers etc etc. He was a true innovator (like Jared), thinking of window cleaners and really taking things forward. Others picked up the torch where he left off, Unger, Moerman (full credit to Bob Hat), Jared, and others. Full credit to all of them. BETWEEN THEM ALL, our job is safer, and easier.

The concept proposed prior, is certainly not a cure all (there exists no such thing). And (with all due respect) the Samuri is not a one size fit’s/pleases all, as Jared realistically expected. But it has become a really really good product for many, but not for all.

That’s not a negative, that’s a plus! That leaves another potential market to be filled Jared!

I envision in the future…someone combining all the best BOAB T-Bar/Combination-Fliq tools holding innovations into one (for one side of your hip), and someone designing better, yet separate squeegee carrying plastic holders (for the other side of your hip). Concentrating and simplifying the best of both worlds.

Lastly, I think the Samuri is a great tool, everyone enjoy it’s advantages, well done Jared.

I had to do the same. Now I’m stuck refreshing the page constantly just waiting for the blue to be in stock, like some sort of Samauri junkie

Seriously right? I swear if I miss out or they run out before I hit buy… :frowning: I’ll be sad.

Yeah, but Bob is meticulous in how he does things to fit his preference. For US storefront and commercial guys, we do things different.

  1. To have both mop and squeegee on the same side frees up the other side for a towel bag, water bottle or whatever. If you don’t need towels then yeah, you can rock two boabs. But I’m not interested in carrying around the extra weight.

Efficiency is traded off against weight and comfort which might be fine for a residential route, but for storefront and commercial and an 8 hour drag, it’s probably not worth it.

  1. Having scrubber and squeegee on assigned sides leaves little for the development of ambidextrous skill. Being ambidextrous negates the need for assigned sides.

  2. Having boabs on both sides can hinder pole work. I carry a boab on my right, pole on the left.

Yeah, but I’m not sure you need a second boab if you have a holster. Leather holsters are a lot lighter.

Humm, and see with the Samurai design, I could design a partition which divides the body into 4 separate compartments for 4 separate squeegees and you could carry the mop on the other side.

Oh, I do appreciate the feedback and certainly don’t take it as an attack on my design. And this is the sort of stuff I like to see because with my partition, I can design all sorts of different configurations depending on what people want. Me personally, I could never carry two boabs. But if it becomes a popular setup, then we can make it happen.

And oh, this Samurai… is part 1 of my idea. I just need to recoup some investment before launching the next phase.

In the meantime, I am working on a new type of buckle. One that would allow the boab to be stiff against your leg preventing it from rotating while using large tools. Then, with a flip of a switch, allow the boab to rotate. I’m thinking if you’re outside using large tools the boab should be stiff. When you’re inside a restaurant climbing in and out of booths, or inside a house, you need the boab to rotate.

The buckle shouldn’t be too too expensive to make, but yeah, I still need to recover from the Samurai before I can start work on it.

Jared, I kinda got the impression from using my Samurai that it was designed with route work in mind, am I right? I don’t do any route work and couldn’t see much benefit to it in residential. Am I missing something?

I was thinking that with the rise of the pad tools like the excelerator in residential, the samurai gives you the option of carrying a squeegee and mop plus pad tool.

i like my wagtail for interior alot and usin my sorbo in tighter places where its too annoying to close with wagtail

but im short and all my jobs require pole work anyway so i like carrying the two exterior its nicer to have moerman scrubber since it holds a ton of water. bout too cut one up and sew it like a wag pad. ive already sewn like 4 of my own reg wag pads

I guess I designed it with flexibility in mind over everything else. Route or residential…
