Let’s all remember who came up with that not personal line. Don Corleone who made his living as a ruthless crime boss in The God Father. A brilliant example of a total degenerate justifying his actions. LOL

Perhaps it was his lawyer, I forget

I think its ridiculous. Hes a new small time guy trying to start up im assuming and your crushing him. You may get a couple new clients but is it worth it?!

Karmas coming for you! Hope you park work vehicles somewhere safe!

I cant get over how much this annoys me. Imagine how crushed and angry he was when he realized what happened.

Technically Not his customers if they call you first. Just saying

You’re right, Steve, that is an assumption. As @JohnC pointed out, the warnings can be missed.

If I had somehow gotten busy and let my domain lapse, I’d certainly want someone to give me a heads up. I wouldn’t expect it,

just like if I lost my wallet on a busy street, I wouldn’t really expect it to be returned to me with all the money in it. But I sure would want someone to do that for me, and I’ll do the same for someone else if I ever stumble upon a lost wallet.

If I somehow found out who picked up my wallet, with my ID and everything in it, and they decided “finders, keepers”… well, I’m not sure what I’d do. I’m not a violent or vengeful person. But the temptation would be there to somehow try and bring them to shame.

For me, a lost domain is like a lost wallet. It has monetary value, it (usually) has identifying information of the previous owner, and it’s not that hard to lose. It’s up to the owner to keep good track of it, but if it is somehow lost, I don’t believe that “finders, keepers” applies.

“Karmas coming for you! Hope you park work vehicles somewhere safe!”

Reminds me of the morning I went out to my van in a safe neighborhood and noticed my neighbor, a painter, had four flat tires on his car. All 4 tires slashed. Karma

Reminds me of another saying. “He who laughs last laughs best”

you don’t know that.

The only part I thought was shady was the redirect, which I decided against. With the research I did, I’m not even sure that he ever used the domain as I could only find two links back to the page, and one was the facebook page that caused me to stumble upon it. There was also no cache of the page that I could find.

I dont think that buying his domain was back stabbing or wrong in any way. If I dont pay my mortgage and someone buys my house, its not their bad… Its mine.

I did actually try to buy that domain when I started my business and it wasnt available. I like the domain and will use it in the future as the name generalizes the area that I work in and has window cleaning in it as well.

@WndwClnr, Who said he was a new smaill time guy? From what I read on the guy he has more experience than me. When I was starting this part time he was working for another company. He launched his company facebook page the same time that I quit my job, launched my website and went full time. He was on the same pace as I was.

I guess that analogy helped widen my perspective, just a bit.

I personally would have still tried to reach out to him. If I could confirm for certain that he’s no longer in business (or has no interest in keeping the site up for some other reason), then I’d setup the redirect and capture any possible traffic of people looking for those services. Otherwise, the domain is just in limbo.

May I ask why exactly you felt that a redirect was shady?

Shady because the link is on his Facebook page. So his customers could click on his link and end up on my site thinking it’s his. That’s ultimately why I decided against the redirect.

one of the largest most aggressive companies in my city let theirs lapse last year. i posted on here about it for feedback and talked to my web guy. he suggested he try to get it which would give me more time to think about what i wanted to do and would not put me directly in view.

they resubscribed before full expiry though so i never had to decide.

i have had the shoe on the other foot though, a “friend” registered a business name i had promoted but never gotten around to registering. i was pissed. divine justice kicked in soon he lost his house and marriage and his wife sold me a bunch of his his business stuff really cheap.

Not shady at all.

Buying expired domains and repurposing them is common practice in the SEO world.

I have a handful of them myself.

If you let your domain expire, tough luck.

If I didn’t pay rent, my landlord would rent my house to someone else. Same concept.

Best response. Think of the customers who are going to an expired website and now have to waste their time looking for another provider. Nothing wrong with helping customers get what they need.

Just adding two cents. Agree with Leavingnc. Local guys should be friendly competition. You are going to run into this guy somewhere, at some point, and it will probably be awkward. There will come a time when you will need something and they can maybe help.

Update: I sent them a message and have returned the domain back to him.
