"I Left Payment Under The Mat"

How many of you guys choose NOT to have money left out for you from your customers. I’m thinking of asking my customers to no longer leave payment out just for an added level of security.

Would it give a more professional appeal also? What are your guy’s thoughts.

checks =ok
cash = never

So you would have them leave a check out still? Just not cash.

Never would I have a customer leave payment out. If they absolutely cannot be present to settle the invoice, then the choice is either mail me a check or wire it with Chase Quickpay

Leave the check in an envelope under the mat, in the mailbox, or on the back patio table. All of those have worked for me before. Cash? Hand it to me.

yeah. i also provide online payment options, can take card over the phone, accept PP, and can invoice.

but nothing wrong with a check left for me. its safe.

A check in an envelope under the front door mat is not uncommon. I have a customer that leaves me a check under the front door mat when I clean just the outside. Now cash, I want that handed to me. Too many things could go wrong with leaving cash outside.

Buy one of those fake rocks and have them put it in there.

So if you showed up and they left cash anyways what would you do? I only ask because I have a feeling one of my customers is going to do that.

If the cash was there, and the customer wasn’t, then I’d have no choice but to take it. Paid is paid and I’m not one to argue what’s already been done.

But I’d never ask or even consent to a customer leaving cash. That opens too many doors for “Oh but I left it right there. The FedEx guy must have seen it and taken it”. No sir. Not having it.

So maybe take photos and email them that you have got the cash. And let them know next time not to just leave cash laying out. But to help them appreciate the added level of security for why we do things the way we do.

In my town there is a ring of small town thugs. They run around town checking under door mats to see if there is a house key under the mat or better yet cash. They’re called the under the mat gang. People have been leaving stuff under mats for many decades but I guess it’s no longer a safe thing to do. Bummer. :wink:
