How Long Does Unger Hydropower Resin Last?

I bought my system for 1000 bucks from the uk and to be honest i could have built it for much less

Once i got used to it i realized it was very simple

I have been searching for a reasonable source of resin in Canada. If you find one please let me know.

Contact Mark Strange at the Window Cleaning Store.

I have been using Mark Strange at beautiful view of the window cleaning store so far. Would certainly be interested if someone finds cheaper

A cubic ft of resin is sold in most US distributors for around $200-210US per bag = $260-$270 CAD. I actually sell it for for $239 CAD.

Mark definitely had the lowest price I found. Most of his prices are slightly below other suppliers for Canada.

So without a bag do you have any resin coming out the hose? I just got a couple bags refilled at a local filtration place and it was less than half the price however when i ran the water through the unit the tds was still 130. I saw him put brand new resin. not sure why it didnā€™t work.

When using loose resin nothing comes out of the container during use.

What is your incoming tds? How much volume are you putting through it? (liters per minute?) It should be but a trickle of water coming in or you are running the water through the resin too fast.

I changed nothing from my regular routine. Iā€™ve used it a hundred times. only thing that changed was the resin refill. usually get a new bag from wcr. I have an ro but didnā€™t have enough pressure so switched to di only and the tds was then high although i had just got the new resin 1 hour earlier. I called the filtration company and the guy who put the new resin in said that it should still dry clear (sounds crazy at 130). He was right though and the customer loved the windows. Before you asked I checked the tds on 2 different meters and I checked the glass from a million angles.

I believe the incoming tds was 130

Was it mixed bed resin? Thereā€™s different types of resin. Iā€™ve never heard of tds staying the same after going through virgin mixed bed resin. Maybe a silly question but does your TDS meter have a ā€˜holdā€™ button and it held th last reading?

I have a 2 stage Hydropower.
My personal observation (not scientifc, mind you), is that the 2 resin bags donā€™t give you as much work life as a 3/4 cube of loose mixed bed resin or maybe even a 1/2 cube. Iā€™m buying 2 bags every 2-3 weeks in the busy season. I donā€™t use pure water all the time, but as often as I can when it makes sense.
Still, since I have to travel 55 miles one way to get a tank recharge for about the same price as 2 bags, Iā€™ve stuck with the Hydropower. Itā€™s simply more convenient for me.

Hey, this may be a stupid question but I was wondering. Can I buy an RO Membrane without buying the housing?? Also, do you have any recommendations for some cheap but quality ones that I can use to filter the water before going into my nLite?

Hello,

Yes, you can purchase a membrane separate from the housing.

Unfortunately, weā€™re in different countries. I have my sources in Canada but youā€™ll have to ask your fellow countrymen. Just a word of caution, donā€™t be blinded by cheap filters and membranes. Not all of them have the same specifications and capabilities.

Makes sense. I canā€™t use just a membrane without the housing though right? Do you have a ball park for how much a good one cost??

Get a whole house water filter and put a carbon filter in it, install it before your system. It will add a lot of life to your tanks.

I used to go through 3 sets of DI tanks a year, now just 1 or 2!

How much do those typically run?? The whole house water filter?

We had a problem with our Hydropower tanks kicking really quick.

Eventually, after the TDS got high while in the bags, we started cutting the bags open and simply dumping the resin in. That extends the life of the same resin by weeks, even after it seems to have kicked.

I think what is happening is that the water is taking the path of least resistance, which would be through the thin segment closest to the tank walls. The resin in the middle wasnā€™t seeing much action.

Theyā€™re working much better now, and Iā€™m happy about it because I like the quick-change design, and I didnā€™t want to toss a $2k investment lol
