Edit: I forgot to warm up my pole. when it wouldn’t extend I had to go nose-to-needles with a spruce tree that had the nerve to block a window :confounded:

Yogi had a good run in the surf today. I did a bit of running too when he wouldn’t come back after his usual hour on the beach.

I just finished hiring an 18 year old. My intent is to have him and possibly another employee do most/all of the janitorial work so that I can focus my worker bee hours on window cleaning and carpet cleaning from now until the end of the season, approximately early November.

One and done. Hired on Wednesday fired on Thursday.

The next week my next hire didn’t last two hours. Her tendinitis flared up.

The next day my third hire worked out. He is focused and has a good work ethic. Unfortunately he will go fishing in June but at least I will have a good worker for a while.

In response to posts that expect to have large gross revenues and steep increases in business in their first few years I have been looking at my first quarter grosses for the last few years.

After I bought the business I exceeded the initial projected first 1/4 gross in 2016 by 20%.
I exceeded the initial projected first 1/4 gross by 25% in 2017.
I exceeded the initial projected first 1/4 gross by 31% in 2018.
I have a steady growth of 5-6% for the first quarters of each year.

That rate of growth probably won’t propel me into becoming an internet business guru but it is a realistic portrayal of one small business that is surviving in a small town at the end of the road (my town is literally at the end of the only highway in Alaska). I realize that margin is more important than gross revenue but that is rarely discussed by the newcomers.

Today I had a “first”. I called a WC resi job and postponed until I get back from a 7 day vacation to see my kids and grandson. I postponed because I am fatigued and my tendinitis needs some rest. I’ve been working 6, sometimes 7 days a week for too many years.

I am very fortunate that I rarely get sick enough to miss work over the last 3 decades. This is probably because of all the shots I got during my 3 years in the Corps a long time ago. The flip side of that coin is that I have not been scheduling enough time to recharge my body.

I was excited last month because April was my best grossing month since I started almost 2 1/2 years ago. I’ve been trying to make May surpass April but I see now that it is more important to slow down before I fall down. Being fatigued and hurried while doing ladder work is not a good combination.

Did a lakefront resi yesterday for my first repeat customer in the Fairbanks area, which is almost 600 miles from Homer. I go to Fairbanks on working vacations to see my kids and grandson.

The client wanted a repeat but then noticed that her windows were still clean from last year so she asked if I wanted to clean their cabin at a place called Harding Lake. I had never heard of it so I looked at Google map and saw it was only 48 miles from Fairbanks. I like seeing new places so off I went.
Although the lake hadn’t thawed the temps were in the high 50s.

I met a member of the greatest generation today. My client was in the Marine Corps in WWII.

He got injured at Iwo Jima in 1945 and was also at Tinian, Guam and Saipan. He was in the 9th Marines Infantry Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. I was in the Corps back in the 80s but I think this is the first time I met a Marine who fought at Iwo Jima. When I was growing up on an abandoned military base in the Aleutian Islands these guys were my heroes.

I learned a bit about my prices relevant to other local WCers. When I told the client my bid was $200 for her 2 story resi today (10 ground story panes, 8 second story, 1 skylight requiring roof walking, 19 interior N2G panes) the lady said she already had a bid for $130. I don’t renegotiate my bids so “the other guy” will get the job. The other guy will be doing 6 ladder sets in real mushy sloping ground, what a pain.

Glad to know that I’m not undercutting.

Now I have 401-Ks for employees. Since I am an employee of the S-Corp that I own I am feeling good about this. This will also help with recruitment and retention of good employees.
