Dallas, TX License or Permit?

Hello everyone,

I was going to begin a side window cleaning business aside from working my part-time job. So far I have chosen a domain name and am waiting until I have the funds to build a website with it. Purchased business cards with a quick estimate on the back and several start-up items such as 18", 12" squeegee, T-bar, mops, bucket, dawn, 8 and 16 ft poles with surgical towels, etc.

I have been watching a lot of videos from Bubble Guy, Luke the Window Cleaner and SteveO to get an idea and techniques to practice on my personal windows before I begin bidding storefronts locally in the Dallas County area.

I plan on buying general liability insurance and I would be the sole proprietor and would look to shop around different insurance for a workers compensation add on for free since from what I have read, it would not apply to the owner anyway. It would be more of a way to market a business if they even asked if I had WC.

That was some basic background before going into my main question since I wanted to lay out what I have done so far. So I do not get in trouble while working, are there any business licenses or permits I need to attain before soliciting and providing a service for window cleaning in the Dallas County area. This question could be directed towards @whatapane since I read he was in the DFW area.

Thanks for any comments, suggestions and tips

You need a state tax ID to collect and pay Texas sales tax. This permit is required to open a business account at a bank, which is the only way to process a check made out in your business name.

This is the only licensing that you need. As far as I know, they did away with all the county and city licensing years ago.

What part of Dallas? I’m on the East side of things.

Have you met Paul at Dallas Window Supply up in Richardson? He’s an excellent resource for local connections - insurance, pure water filtration as well as other window cleaners in the area.

Have fun and enjoy the heat!

Nah, I have not met anyone yet and been lurking the forums reading. I would be in the South Dallas area.

I have an EIN, found the NACIS number but I don’t have a taxpayer id number. Do I receive that when I register the business through the county clerk or state?

You will need to register your business name with the county and then you will need a tax ID. I believe the registration requirement is still active as it regulates business identity and it protects citizens and keeps more than one business from using the same name.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Sorry I accidentally tagged you in the last comment. I meant to tag clean suds.

That’s the link for the assumed name filing with the country clerk’s office.

Thanks for the advice. After registering the business with the county, that is when I receive the tax ID number to apply for the sales tax permit?

Yes. It’s pretty simple from that point on.

Make a point to see Paul. He’s a great connection to have in the city. He’s right off of Central Expressway past LBJ.

Glad to have you around.
