$2000 CCU job, horrible silicone and they want it billed to window company (pic)

CCU is no joke. The price tag for doing them is tempting but at times not worth it. I don’t like doing them and am very judicial about ones that I accept. The discussion with everyone involved has repeated expressions of debris that “was allowed to contaminate the glass”, yes - the words “debris”, “allowed” and “contaminate” are used often. It is the GC job to insist the construction crew not compromise the integrity of the glass. (More words to use).

The last one to touch it is the first one to blame.

I didn’t red the whole thread but I’d like to offer my .02 cent. First and foremost, like the other guys said, who ever hires you is responsible for paying. If it’s the window company that is going to pay then you need them to agree to it. Get it in writing and signed. Your potential client has no authority to hire you on their behalf.

Next, I dont think 2 g’s is too high. I would have charged something similar. If the window company is really going to pay for it then I’d charge them more. They prob profited over 30,000 for installing those windows (if not more, I dont really know) and can afford the extra.

Have you done jobs like this before. If not than your 10 hour estimate might be a little off. First ccu i ever did I charged double my normal rate and ended up making about half of what I normally do. We spent 30-45 min per pane on some of the glass. You might consider doing one of the worse windows for free so you can get an idea of what it takes to get it properly cleaned and then you can share that info with your clients to help justify the price.

So to me this is how it should go. The home owner calls gets your estimate they forward it to the Window company. They are them responsible to get the payment from the Window company ,An you receive payment from home owner.
Payment upon completion period. I’m not playing monkey in the middle
But it’s sounds like a nitemare. Like Steve says pass.

Thats easy. Because the window manufacturer didnt authorize any work for you. They know nothing about you. These guys are trying to find a sucker. Don’t be that guy.

Tell them you want HALF up front and 25% when you are almost done.

When they laugh, laugh back and walk.

I use a product called “Oil-Flo” from Titan Labs (available at ABC Window Cleaning and probably most of the other suppliers) to dissolve silicon. I also tend to quote the job two ways: 1. The price for CCU and 2. The regular price after CCU is finished. Be careful & best wishes

Thanks John. I was thinking of doing the same thing for two quotes. If this job ends up going through, ill keep everyone updated on how it went, whether its a success or a failure.

I do a lot of CCU, no big deal.

1.Get a signed scratch waiver from the homeowner, and the glass supplier, and the builder.

  1. Quote the job so that you can make crazy money.

  2. Require a credit card # and deposit of 50%. (Make the 50% actually cover the whole job if you can, lol)

  3. Complete job, collect final payment, take the wife to fancy place for the weekend.

Simple.

If any one of the above steps cannot be completed - walk away.

I usually use steel ( or bronze ) wool. Keep it wet and soaped. I always test a small area first in the corner of a garage window. A razor is usually ineffective for silicone. When I see silicone that bad on windows - I always ask who did the work because I never want to use that company for remodel. Amazing sometimes how bad remodel and construction co can screw stuff up.

It’s not the amount of work or the price. It’s just that he doesn’t know who will pay or if he’ll get paid. Spoiler alert: he won’t.
