Black Diamond has quickly become one of the most popular choices of rubber among professionals thanks to the company’s founder, Casper Schjorring of Denmark.
Casper Schjorring graduated with a Master of Science in Polymer Engineering, then went to work in 1991 for ICI in Middlesbrough, UK, for their design section for advanced polymers (a.k.a., plastics.)
However, this was also around the time that computers and the Internet were blossoming, both of which interested Casper, so he left the plastic and rubber industry to instead work with bits and bytes. It didn’t take long, however, for Casper to realize he preferred the feeling of tangible creations, so he returned to polymers.
By 2001, Casper joined with a childhood friend to start the Gummifabrikken Company– which means “rubber” in Danish. There they made a variety of products, ranging from condoms to the first collapsible funnel. They also had a separate business manufacturing diving equipment under the brand G-Dive, making latex seals for cold water divers working in extreme environments. It was at this time that they also began making and private labeling squeegee rubber for other companies.
In 2008, Casper traveled to the U.S. with hopes of expanding their customer base, leaving total control of the European side of the business in his friend’s hand. When he returned a year later, the business had shut down completely.
This was hugely disappointing for Casper. However, it also allowed him the freedom to have total control of a new company and take it in the direction he wanted. So in 2014, Casper founded Black Diamond rubber. “Black Diamond” was not only an easy name to remember, Casper intended for it to signify sharp edges and high quality.
Before restarting as Black Diamond, Casper had manufactured and private labeled rubbers for other brands, but they were continuously asking Casper to lower his costs. Instead, Casper decided it would be smarter to sell his rubber himself, as his own brand, in turn cutting out the middleman and saving the end user extra cost. Additionally, Black Diamond optimizes every step in the manufacturing and distribution process, from buying the raw materials to delivering to customers – all of which keeps the cost of the rubber down.
Black Diamond has been growing every month since it launched, and is currently sold in over 15 countries, with plans to continue global expansion. Additionally, Casper continues to look for ways to improve his product and processes.
An example is Black Diamond’s double molded squeegee rubber, which involves molding two pieces of rubber together in order to protect the sharp edge of the squeegee rubber and to protect the edges from damage prior to use. Black Diamond also developed a method for controlling a perfect straight edge.
Casper gets his ideas and motivation by talking with end users to find out what they like and what problems they need solved. Black Diamond’s team of product testers also provide feedback that is implemented into their products.
Black Diamond manufactures both soft and hard squeegee channel rubber in the Round-Top design, and is available in various sizes, from 12 to 36 inches. The soft rubber is for year-round use, except in extreme heat, in which case the hard rubber is a better choice.
Black Diamond offers ready cut or cut-to-size replacement rubber. Window Cleaning Resource carries a full selection of Black Diamond window cleaning rubber.
